Lava vs Claude Cowork for operations teams

Call notes can sit in one app while the follow-up waits in Gmail and the CRM record stays out of date. Lava brings those apps into one workspace, with an agent that can act in them. Claude Cowork handles tasks across files and connected tools too, with a focus on documents, spreadsheets, and analysis.

What is Claude Cowork now?

Anthropic merged Cowork into Claude on September 16, 2026.

You give Claude files and instructions, and it plans and completes tasks with several steps. It can produce reports and slides, analyze spreadsheets, and use connectors or a browser when needed. It asks for approval before consequential actions. You can continue a session across desktop, web, and mobile.

Pro and Max subscribers get the full set of agent features first. Other plans follow as Anthropic rolls out the update.

How Lava works

Lava is an agent workspace for the tools a team already uses. In a company of 50 to 100 people, that can mean email, chat, a CRM, and reporting tools.

Lava Desktop runs on Mac and Windows. Your apps stay open as signed-in tabs in one window, with the agent alongside. It reads the tab you are on, acts through the app's connector, and shows the result in the app. For internal portals or older systems without an API, it can use the browser.

You choose when the agent asks for approval:

  • Asks on sends pauses before actions such as sending a message, deleting data, making a payment, or sharing something outside the team.
  • Always asks pauses before every change.
  • Never asks completes the task without approval prompts.

You can save a workflow and start it from the input bar with a slash command.

Admins choose the team's apps and connections. Members keep their personal accounts, and each teammate starts with the same workspace template and apps already in place.

What do Lava and Claude cost?

Lava's monthly credits cover usage across models and connected apps. You can buy more credits after using your allowance. Claude uses plan limits, and Max also has weekly limits. The allowances are not directly comparable. The amount of work you can do depends on the task and model.

Where Claude fits

Claude is a good fit when most of your unfinished work involves documents. You can research and write with sources, build slide decks, and analyze spreadsheets with the files at hand. For deep writing and deck production, we would choose Claude.

An existing Claude subscriber also has fewer setup decisions. Chat, desktop, mobile, and scheduled tasks share one subscription, so the team can use the agent without adding another vendor. If your team already uses Anthropic's models, it can keep that choice across its work.

Apps+UI

Connectors and browser access

Use the browser for tools without an API.

Lava is useful when finishing a task means changing several apps. It can update a CRM record from call notes, draft a follow-up in Gmail, post a weekly recap in Slack, or pull signups into Sheets. Your teammates see the changes in the apps they already use.

Routines run on schedules in the cloud. They keep running between sessions, even when your laptop is closed. These unattended runs do not pause for approval.

You can choose Claude, GPT, Gemini, or open-weight models in the same workspace. That lets you use one model for research and another for quick coordination, with usage charged to the same balance.

Setup still takes work. You need to connect your apps and decide which approval modes fit your team.

Approval controls

Both agents have approval controls. In Lava, the mode you choose determines when the agent pauses before making changes in your apps.

How to choose

Using both means paying for two subscriptions and setting up two tools. That can make sense if your team has substantial document work and app coordination to handle. Lava can use Claude models, so a second workspace does not require a different model.
